Drum Talk, Roots and Rhythm!
Community Drumming workshop with Beverly Botsford

Building community, celebrating diversity and exploring the infinite potential of the groove, Beverly will share basic techniques of hand drums and percussion with a focus on the traditions and inspirations of Africa, Cuba, and the Caribbean. With Congas, dundun, djembe, shekere, and an array of percussion instruments we will explore groove, phrasing, call and response, poly-rhythmic orchestration, dynamics, and improvisation. This is not to be missed!

Honoring the old, Beverly will help us create the new and construct a “parade of rhythm” with parts for all levels, ages and experience; for fun, self-expression and community participation in the Hillsborough Handmade Parade!

Beverly will graciously share her congas, dununs, djembe, shekeres, and a wild array of percussion instruments. Bring your own drums, percussion and extras to share if you have them and be ready to join in! If possible, bring a large, office-sized water bottle to learn hand patterns with. You can bring sheet-rock buckets and sticks to learn bass patterns... If not, we will have extras. (donations of water bottles, drums and/or rhythm instruments would be so very much appreciated) Beverly will ask experienced participants to assist in demonstrating orchestration and holding important, foundational parts.

“The language of rhythm is universal. The goal is empowerment, enlightenment and inspiration for people in all walks of life.”
Beverly Botsford
