Second session --------- 1:00 pm to 4:30 pm , Saturday, June 27, 2009 Saturday, July 18, 2009 11:00 AM to 4:00 pm
This leadership workshop is intended for artists, teachers and any creative individual willing to learn new skills and then share those skills with others to assist in creating giant puppets for the Hillsborough Handmade Parade.
After completing the two session Leadership Workshop, participants are encouraged to share their new skills with their friends, family, neighbors or social groups to create their own parade ensemble. Think about encouraging your students, class, team, or church group to work together with a theme and participate in the parade as a group.
As the leader of a group you can participate in the leadership puppet and mask making workshop for free. Then, use your new skills to help create your groups unique parade entry.
Members of your group can then take the public workshops to help refine the group’s ideas. You’ll be surprised at the creativity within yourself and your group!
Mark’s sense of costuming and making wild creations began with Mardi Gras parades in New Orleans in the late 70’s. As a hands on participant in Art Parade Krewes such as The Contemporary Art’s Centers Krewe of Clones, the Krewe of Kosmic Debris and the Pair-A-Dice Tumblers.
More recently, Mark participated in workshops hosted by Nana Projects at the Towson University Center for the Arts in Baltimore. There he was able to collaborate and learn new skills with other parade and theater organizers including Spiral Q Puppet Theater from Philadelphia, and Macnas from Galway, Ireland.
Explore your creative potential! Bring your idea of ‘Metamorphosis’ on the Eno River that you would like to create. This workshop is free to those intending to participate in the Handmade Parade. We ask only that you commit to lead others with the knowledge you have gained so that they too can make a "Giant creature of the Eno River" to march with in the Hillsborough Handmade Parade Saturday, October 17, 2009.

Summer Enrichment Program:
Childrens Theater and Parade Workshop
The Hillsborough Arts Council is sponsoring a three day parade
workshop at Central Elementary School in conjunction with the Orange
County Summer Enrichment program. Volunteer Artists from the
Hillsborough Art Council's Handmade Parade will work with children to
develop artistic, theatrical and music skills culminating in the Children's Handmade Parade on July 23rd. The parade will begin at 10:30 at Central Elementary and parade to Hillsborough Elementary then back to Central. There are no fees for the workshops.
Students registered in the Summer Enrichment Program will create projects and a performance to stimulate creativity
and develop the interrelationship between nature, the arts and
humanity. Taking inspiration from the Annual Handmade Parade theme "The
waters of the Eno and her creatures", the Eno River will serve as a
link to the natural environment and science. It will also increase
awareness of social responsibility and stewardship of our natural
resources.
The collaborative partnership of the Orange County Schools and the
Hillsborough Arts Council will give students the opportunity to study
with visiting artists. This will be a fun and creative learning
experience for teachers, artists and students alike! Volunteer Artists: Orange County School Staff Braima Moiwai Dr. Rene Carmen,

The Orange County Schools Summer enrichment program is a program
designed exclusively for pre-selected students. Both at risk students
and those seeking additional academic opportunities are included. First
through fifth grade students from Central, Efland Cheeks and New Hope
Elementary Schools are participating in the program.
Summer Enrichment students will explore poetry, creative writing, and
drama to sharpen communication skills and motivate them to be
successful in school.
We need your help!
This spring the Hillsborough Arts Council working with The Orange
County Schools Summer Enrichment program applied for a grant to develop
this program with a greater number of artists, teachers and programs.
However, the funding was unavailable. The artists listed above did not
want to see this important outreach program fall by the wayside, so
they put together this more modest program for the students of the
enrichment program. It is an entirely volunteer effort and as such we
hope to find donations to help make it possible. Donations will go
toward the purchase of materials for the children's workshops.
