Last Friday, June 25
Phabulous Phunk Phamily

The Phabulous Phunk Phamily bring a strong rhythmic groove to their set of Funk, Blues, and old school R&B.

The Phabulous Phunk Phamily, or PH3 , was named by lead and slide guitarist Harvey Arnold. Playing Southern rock and blues, Arnold toured with The Outlaws, with whom he earned two gold records and shared the stage with the Rolling Stones. Sallie Deaton shares lead vocals. A veteran of numerous bands, her stylings have been compared to Etta James and Coco Taylor. Saxophonist Rev. Ransom is well-known to Orange County audiences. His exciting solos span all of PH3’s genres. Bassist Geoff Hathaway is a veteran of several funk groups, while keyboardist Zina Smith, adds piano and organ to the mix.

The band’s rhythm section is anchored by veteran drummer James “Bubba” Norwood, who toured and recorded with Ike and Tina Turner throughout the 60’s. “Ike taught me how to be a power drummer, a driving drummer and how to play with a well put-together show,” he says.

Still at the top of his game, James has kept the beat for many of music’s most famous artists, including Little Richard, Gladys Knight, Archie Bell and the Drells, Cool John Ferguson, Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye.

PH3 is an accomplished group of musicians that also give back to the community... Both Norwood and Arnold are on the artist roster of the Hillsborough based Music Makers Relief Foundation. Guitarist Peter Kramer was one of the founders of Last Fridays back in 1998 and guitarist Harvey Arnold works as a life coach for OE Enterprises, a Community Rehabilitation Program serving people with disabilities.

Today's Brazilian music is the result of a long simmering mix of Brazilian cultural heritages with global influences such as Reggae, Rock, Mambo, Salsa and Merengue...

The music is in constant creative movement, importing and exporting musical influences from around the world to create a magical, mystical music without losing its Brazilian identity. It is the constant search for new forms within Brazil's diverse musical heritage that most captivates us and influences musicians around the world.

Brazilian Soul performs a variety of Brazilian musical styles from the Forró (For All) to the complex harmonies of Bossa Nova and Brazilian Classical music. You will hear rhythms with a strong African influence such as Samba, Baião, Maracatú and the beautiful lyrics and vocal arrangements of Brazilian Popular Music.

Brazilian Soul is led by Brazilian guitarist and vocalist Paulo Lopes.

Terry 'Klawth' Lonergan, is a veteran drummer/percussionist who has performed and recorded with numerous artists playing many different styles of music in his 25 year career. Born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, Terry’s sound is both contemporary and steeped in tradition. September 2009:

LIVE MUSIC!

This month the main musical group is the drenched with the sounds of New Orleans, as Adrian Duke’s piano is overshadowed only by the raw emotional power of his voice. Best known for his performance for Queen Elizabeth II on her recent visit to the US, Adrian Duke is currently touring in support of his most recent release, "ADRIATICA" as well as writing & recording music for his fifth CD. Expect it to be released in 2010.

LIVE MUSIC!
Strictly Clean and Decent is an acoustic trio from the Lenoir, North Carolina area which features Patrick Crouch, Ron Shuffler, and Kay Crouch whose blend of brilliant vocal harmonies tops a solid instrumental foundation. They are dedicated to performing a variety of musical styles in an acoustic setting. Their eclectic repertoire includes modern folk songs by American, Canadian, and Irish songwriters, the fiery breakdowns and songs of family and home found in both traditional and contemporary bluegrass settings, and centuries-old Celtic airs and dance tunes. All of this is peppered with a healthy dose of popular jazz standards, swing and western swing music, and a few classic country tunes thrown in to provide a program certain to be enjoyed by all.

Ron Shuffler plays the upright bass with Strictly Clean and Decent. Ron is a veteran of the early Top 40 and beach music scene but also is well known in country and bluegrass circles. His solid bass playing and impeccable harmony vocals are without equal. Ron was raised in a musical family and his eldest brother, George, virtually created the cross-picking style of guitar playing while working with The Stanley Brothers, a first-generation bluegrass band, in the 1950s and 60s.

Kay Crouch performs on the guitar, flute, piano, and tin whistle with Strictly Clean and Decent. Kay has a widely varied musical background that includes symphonic and solo percussion work and musical theatre as well as country and bluegrass music. Her interpretive vocals have been an asset to the trio since she joined in 1991.

Patrick Crouch handles the mandolin, banjo, dobro, fiddle, and guitar for the trio. Patrick has been performing acoustic music since 1977 when he founded New River Reign, a staple at Blowing Rock’s P.B. Scott’s Music Hall. He turned to country music with Long Time Gone and, with Ron Shuffler and Reggie Harris, created Strictly Clean and Decent in 1989. Patrick’s intense, often pyrotechnic but always tasteful, instrumental skills are the highlight of every Strictly Clean and Decent show.

CHILDREN’S ART EVENTS!

On the South Lawn of the Courthouse the Arts Council will be hosting a Children's Art Finger Painting workshop with Bryan Carey. All ages welcome! Congruent with the Shaw-Payne legacy, Carey continues to offer opportunities in artistic self–expression to people of all ages and abilities. He endeavors to advance the practice of Shaw’s method, the Shavian Technique™, by promoting finger-painting as an artistic medium through demonstrations in schools and other public venues for adults and children and by reviving its use as an instrument of healing. Carey strives to balance his artistic vision and historical understanding of the “broadly known, yet narrowly understood” art form in order to restore the artistic, educative and therapeutic merits of Shaw’s legacy.

Bryan Carey has been described as “the leading practitioner and teacher of the finger-painting techniques pioneered by [Ruth Faison] Shaw.” He believes that “artistic self-expression is our birthright, not exclusive to a narrow segment of society.” Through painting and teaching, Carey continues to practice the rich techniques established by Miss Shaw while realizing her dream of keeping the door of imagination open throughout one’s lifetime.

LIVE MUSIC!

Cyril Lance brings his Outskirts of Infinity Arkestra to the Hillsborough Last Friday Concert Series Friday May 29th for a night of spontaneous and fiery root, blues and rock.

Cyril Lance moved to Orange County in 1994 from Boston and is well-known for his song-writing and guitar playing. He has toured extensively as well as releasing two critically-acclaimed albums since moving down south.

"Moving to North Carolina really reconnected me to roots music in a way that I didn't anticipate," Lance says "The Piedmont has such an amazing connection to the history of blues and roots music and I feel fortunate to have fallen into this incredible community of musicians here."

Lance's band features some of North Carolina's finest musicians including Hillsborough's own Adrian Duke on piano. Also joining Lance at this show is long-time band member David McCracken on the Hammond B3, who now is the keyboard player for Donna The Buffalo. Both Steven Clarke (bass) and Dan Davis (drums) have been in the band for years.

"It's a thrill and really honor to have both David and Adrian in my band at the same time. Being surrounded by the piano and the Hammond B3 at the same time gives me this incredible ocean of soul for me to explore. Add Steve and Dan and the chemistry is really great which allows us to be very free with what we do." Lance says.

And explore is what Lance is known for. "I believe in taking the essence of a song and using it as a means for exploring something new and relevant, for telling a new story every time I play it and to make sure I bring the audience a long with me."

Lance's show Friday night will feature lots of great music for dancing and listening from zydeco, R&B, southern blues and rock and will feature many songs from his albums.

"Lance is simply outstanding, whether it's meaty, slashing, slide guitar, guttural riffs or delicate, spacey Hendrix-like phrases... it's one of the best blues-rock albums of the year." RELIX Magazine

SPECIAL PROGRAMMING FOR PRESERVATION MONTH!
The Hillsborough Historic District Commission will present its annual Preservation Awards during Last Fridays in downtown Hillsborough.

Mayor Tom Stevens will present four awards on behalf of the commission around 6 p.m. May 29 in front of the Old Orange County Courthouse. Last Fridays, an evening of arts and entertainment, takes place in the downtown Historic District on the last Friday of the month.

The Historic District Commission was established in 1973 to identify, protect and preserve Hillsborough’s historic architectural resources and to educate the public about those resources. The Historic District encompasses more than two centuries of architectural resources, including representative examples of the many architectural styles that reflect the broad time frame.

The first Preservation Awards were given in 1992. This year’s award categories include restoration and addition of a contributing structure; renovation of a contributing structure; addition to a non-contributing house; and new construction of outbuildings.

Contributing structures, constructed prior to 1939, have been identified in the historic inventory as contributing to the character of Hillsborough’s historic district. Non-contributing structures were built after 1939 or have lost much of their original exterior fabric, making them non-contributing to the district’s character.

The Historic District Design Guidelines apply equally to contributing and non-contributing structures. Tax credits may be available for restoration work on contributing structures.

The Historic District Commission is a seven-member volunteer board that reviews applications for building modifications within the Historic District. A majority of its members have specialized training or interest in architecture, preservation, archaeology, history or building methods.

Ain't We Got Fun

The Council will present Ain’t We Got Fun: A Musicale, featuring WP Haines and Co.  The 8 pm show at the Masonic Lodge will present a musical review of the late 1800s and early 1900s.  This pre-vaudeville era, sometimes known as the “Opulent Period”, was a time of high-stepping cakewalks, Ragtime, and impressionism.  The upright piano was being mass-produced, and sheet music was readily available.  The popular music of the day could now be played in everyone’s parlor, and the piano was the portable music player for the urban sound.  In Chicago, St. Louis, and New Orleans, if you went to a party, this is what you would hear.  And, if you went to a club, you might have heard a pop singer of the day, such as Bert Williams, singing these songs.  Last year’s show was sold-out, so get tickets early.   Tickets: Advance:  $8 adult, $4 student (12 and under); Day of:  $10 adult, $5 student (12 and under).

Tickets: Advance:  $8 adult, $4 student (12 and under); Day of:  $10 adult, $5 student (12 and under).  Tickets are also available at Visitor's Center  (150 E. King Street, Hillsborough, NC ).

NEW MAPS OF THE NEW WORLD:
EXPERIMENTAL SHORTS BY ROGER BEEBE

As part of his 55-day East Coast tour, filmmaker/programmer/professor Roger Beebe will be
presenting a program of his short films and videos in Hillsborough as part of the Filmmakers’
Film Series. His films and videos attempt to marry experimental forms with a documentary
interest in cinema as a means of engaging with pressing issues in our everyday lives. If the
works are diverse in subject matter—covering such disparate topics as women in the air force in
World War II, the origin of Shaquille O’Neal’s last name, and the horrors (and beauties) of
suburban sprawl—and are equally diverse in format—with work in both film (16mm, super 8mm,
regular 8mm) and video—they are united by their use of an ironizing poetics to cast a sidelong
glance on some often overlooked realities of 20th and 21st Century Americana.

"[Beebe’s films] implicitly and explicitly evoke the work of Robert Frank, Garry Winogrand and
Lee Friedlander, all photographers of the atomic age whose Western photographs captured the
banalities, cruelties and beauties of imperial America." --David Fellerath, The Independent Weekly.

"Beebe's work is goofy, startling, and important." --Daniel Kraus, Wilmington Encore
