Ain't We Got Fun

The Council will present Ain’t We Got Fun: A Musicale, featuring WP Haines and Co.  The 8 pm show at the Masonic Lodge will present a musical review of the late 1800s and early 1900s.  This pre-vaudeville era, sometimes known as the “Opulent Period”, was a time of high-stepping cakewalks, Ragtime, and impressionism.  The upright piano was being mass-produced, and sheet music was readily available.  The popular music of the day could now be played in everyone’s parlor, and the piano was the portable music player for the urban sound.  In Chicago, St. Louis, and New Orleans, if you went to a party, this is what you would hear.  And, if you went to a club, you might have heard a pop singer of the day, such as Bert Williams, singing these songs.  Last year’s show was sold-out, so get tickets early.   Tickets: Advance:  $8 adult, $4 student (12 and under); Day of:  $10 adult, $5 student (12 and under).

Tickets: Advance:  $8 adult, $4 student (12 and under); Day of:  $10 adult, $5 student (12 and under).  Tickets are also available at Visitor's Center  (150 E. King Street, Hillsborough, NC ).

NEW MAPS OF THE NEW WORLD:
EXPERIMENTAL SHORTS BY ROGER BEEBE

As part of his 55-day East Coast tour, filmmaker/programmer/professor Roger Beebe will be
presenting a program of his short films and videos in Hillsborough as part of the Filmmakers’
Film Series. His films and videos attempt to marry experimental forms with a documentary
interest in cinema as a means of engaging with pressing issues in our everyday lives. If the
works are diverse in subject matter—covering such disparate topics as women in the air force in
World War II, the origin of Shaquille O’Neal’s last name, and the horrors (and beauties) of
suburban sprawl—and are equally diverse in format—with work in both film (16mm, super 8mm,
regular 8mm) and video—they are united by their use of an ironizing poetics to cast a sidelong
glance on some often overlooked realities of 20th and 21st Century Americana.

"[Beebe’s films] implicitly and explicitly evoke the work of Robert Frank, Garry Winogrand and
Lee Friedlander, all photographers of the atomic age whose Western photographs captured the
banalities, cruelties and beauties of imperial America." --David Fellerath, The Independent Weekly.

"Beebe's work is goofy, startling, and important." --Daniel Kraus, Wilmington Encore

FILM!

This month’s Filmmakers Film Series, Friday, July 27th at 8:00 pm at the Hillsborough Masonic Lodge at 142 West King Street in downtown Hillsborough screens Lilyan Sievernich's documentary, JOHN HUSTON AND THE DUBLINERS. At the age of eighty, John Huston completed work on a movie based on James Joyce's classic novella, THE DEAD. It was destined to be his last work and the crowning achievement of Huston's remarkable five-decade career winning the Best Film Award from the National Society of Film Critics. This moving documentary gives an inside account of the production capturing the spirit and brilliance of a Hollywood giant. Additionally, it provides keen insight and understanding into the work of Joyce. THE DEAD marked the first and only time Huston collaborated with both his son (screenwriter Tony Huston) and daughter (acclaimed actress Anjelica Huston) in a feature film. This unique family interplay as well as the grand filmmaker practicing his art, are finely detailed in JOHN HUSTON AND THE DUBLINERS. This screening is co-sponsored by the Hillsborough Arts Council, Weaver Street Market, and Sports Endeavors. Tickets are $5.00 at the door, children under 12 are free.

Music for joyful celebrations, particularly Jewish weddings, has been performed by “klezmorim” since the early middle ages. The great clarinetist Giora Feidman described the instruments as being the loudspeakers of the ‘inner voice’ singing in everyone’s soul.Local group Magnolia's unique sound comes from the mingling of musicians with roots in a panorama of musical traditions: Klezmer, Balkan, Jazz, brass band, polka and classical. The band continues to expand its repertoire: most recently with additions from Vaudeville and from the world of Russian cabaret music.
