Why a Parade?
We seek to bring our community together in a creative, non political way. Our primary goal is to strengthen our community by valuing and celebrating our wonderful diversity. The purpose of the parade is to foster community involvement in the arts through participation in every aspect. The informal atmosphere and hands-on character of the experience allows members of the community to work directly with artists and each other while gaining confidence in their own abilities. Most importantly, by using our collective creative energy to develop this celebration, we can overcome barriers to community participation and harmony. We’ll create a community participation celebration that will bring us together while having fun!
The Handmade Parade is coming!
The magical Handmade Parade rolled at 2:30 pm on Sunday October 19, 2014! There was a wonderful finale on the Burwell School lawn, Bring your chair! Restaurants and shops will be open for shopping and a great lunch before or dinner after the parade.
What was the 2014 parade?
A walking theatrical performance.
The parade theme is Flight on the Eno.
A spectacle of art, creativity, and public theater and music.
Celebration Art combines the challenges of three-dimensional design with the richness of working in community, and the excitement of watching pieces come alive with movement.
Join the parade!
You and your family and friends can create a costume or giant puppet and join the parade... It won't be a parade without YOU! Start planning your puppet for the 2016 parade! Sign up to receive Parade News below...
Who can participate?
Anyone can participate... don’t just be a spectator… join the parade! Everyone is welcome to come to public workshops where instruction will be provided for them to make their own costumes, masks, and giant puppets for the parade, or you could volunteer on a larger build led by a professional artist.
The Handmade Parade is not just for kids— Adults are needed for the really large puppets! We encourage adults to bring their friends, neighbors and social groups to create their own Handmade Parade ensemble.
Think about encouraging your running group, school class, sports team, business or church group to work together with a theme and participate in the parade as a group!
All participants in the parade must register. (it’s free!)
Starts at East Margaret Lane and Court Street and ends at Churton and Union Street at the Burwell School.
Handmade Parade Rules:
Please: no written words, logos or motorized vehicles (except wheelchairs). Entries should not advertise a particular religious or political belief. All parade participants are required to be in costume.
A special thanks to the Town of Hillsborough, The Orange County Arts Commission, and Eno River Mills Inc for providing the space for our storage and workshops.
