The Hillsborough Arts Council Gallery and Gift Shop at 102 North Churton Street.

  • "Local Quilts" featuring a group exhibition of Quilts produced in Orange and Durham Counties by six artists.   The exhibition will feature a variety of quiltmaking techniques with some innovative approaches to this folk art tradition.  The show runs from January 28 through February 21. Opening reception on January 30 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • "Peculiar Light" featuring the oil paintings of Debra Wuliger.  The show runs from February 25 through March 21.  Opening reception on February 27 from 6 – 9 pm. 

  • Presents "Hanging by a Thread" featuring work by Rose Warner. The show runs from March 25 through April 18.  Opening reception on March 27 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Along the Garden Path" featuring a multimedia group exhibition of Local Artists working with the garden theme. The show runs from April 22 through May 23. Opening reception on April 24 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Transient Spring" featuring paintings of Chrystal Hardt and textiles by Jacqui Mehring. The show runs from May 27 through June 20.  Opening reception on May 29 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Invitation au Voyage" featuring mixed media paintings of Bernice Koff and ceramics by Emily Lees. A common bond in the work is a shared passion for all things French.  The streets of Paris appear in the mixed media paintings of Parisian bookstalls & shops by Bernice Koff.  Lees offers modern abstract images inspired by France and the nineteenth century French fascination with Japan, mounted on white vessels and forms. The show runs from June 24 through July 25. Opening reception on June 26 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Upbeat Interpretations of Natural Southern Living" featuring traditional watercolor paintings by Kenny Glenn. The show runs from July 29 through August 22. Opening reception on July 31 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Textile Collage" by Elaine O’Neil. The show runs from August 26 through September 19. Opening reception on August 28 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Painting Spirit" featuring the paintings of Sandy McBride, Tom Willis and Shannon Fitzgerald. These three artist come from very different backgrounds and will each present their unique approach to abstract painting. The show runs from September 23 through October 24. Opening reception on September 25 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Holiday Fine Arts and Crafts Show" featuring a select group of fine artists and skilled craftsmen who have previously shown their works in the Hillsborough Arts Council Gallery and Gift Shop.  We will have several special event openings through November and December. The show runs from October 30 through December 20. Opening reception on October 30 from 6 – 9 pm. There will also be a Reception on December 4 from 6-9 pm for the Holiday Art Walk.

 

The Hillsborough Gallery of Arts at 121 North Churton Street.

  • "Art All Around" featuring work by the artists of the Hillsborough Gallery of Arts - any medium, any size - but it must be round!  The show runs from January 26 through February 22.  Opening reception on January 30 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • "It’s All About the Story" featuring the gallery’s artists respond, in their own mediums, to stories by Lee Smith from “Mrs. Darcy and the Blue-Eyed Stranger.”  The show runs from February 23 through March 22.  Opening reception on February 27 from 6 – 9 pm.  Reading by Lee Smith on Sunday, March 8 from 4 – 6 pm.

  • Presents "Uncharted" featuring jewelry by Nell Chandler, fiber art by Ali Givens, paintings by Ellie Reinhold. The show runs from March 23 through April 19.  Opening reception on March 27 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents  "What I Came Here For" featuring paintings by Michele Yellin, stained glass by Chris Burnside  and jewelry by Arianna Bara. The show runs from April 20 through May 24. Opening reception on  April 24 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Our Art Is…" featuring paintings by Eduardo Lapetina and Pat Merriman, and sculpture by Lynn Wartski. The show runs from May 25 through June 21.  Opening reception on May 29 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Not Alone" featuring paintings by Marcy Lansman, pottery by Garry Childs and kiln-formed glass by Mark Kinsella. The show runs from June 22 through July 19. Opening reception on June 26 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Reflections" featuring paintings by Lolette Guthrie, textiles by Alice Levinson and pottery by Evelyn Ward. The show runs from July 27 through August 23. Opening reception on July 31 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Present Tense" featuring paintings by Linda Carmel and Chris Graebner, blown glass by Pringle Teetor. The show runs from August 24 through September 20. Opening reception on August 28 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "In the Mind’s Eye" featuring fused glass by Susan Hope, paintings by Jude Lobe, and photography by Eric Saunders. The show runs from September 21 through October 25. Opening reception on September 25 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Orange County Artists Guild Open Studio Tour Preview Show", preview work by the artists participating in the 2015 Orange County Artists Guild open studio tour before deciding which studios to visit. The show runs from October 26 through November 15. Opening reception on October 30 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "The Art of Giving" showcasing giftable art for the holiday season by Gallery’s 22 member artists. The show runs from November 16 through January 3, 2016. Reception on December 4 from 6 – 9 pm.

 

The Skylight Gallery at 102 West King Street.

  • Presents the Hillsborough Artists Cooperative's Special Event #4 "Erotica: A Call To Arms?" featuring Co-op Members plus guest artists Joanie Alexander, Michael Brown and Shiangtai Tuan.  Erotic Art, Food, Music and a Special Erotic Surprise on March  27 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents new works in acrylic by Tom Willis. Artist reception on April 24 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents a Student Show and work by studio artists Jayne Bomberg and Tom Guthrie (The Studio of Collective Effervescence), Jennifer E. Miller, Andrea DeGette, Jacquelin Liggins, Tiffney Marley, and Susan Wells. Artists reception on May 29 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents a mixed media show, "Too Much Stuff", curated by Hollie Taylor and Hunter Levinsohn.   • The Skylight Gallery presents "Too Many Lives" featuring two and three dimensional work by Hunter Levinsohn. Artist reception on July 31 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • The Skylight Gallery pesents "Beyond the Selfie: Artists and Their Self Portraits". Featuring mixed media by Joanie Alexander, Jayne Bomberg, Lindsley Bowen, Michael Brown, Andrea DeGette, Ed Eastman, Anne Gregory-Bepler, George Gilmer, Tom Guthrie, Jim Kellough, Hunter Levinsohn, Judy Martell, Jennifer Miller, Eleanor Mills, Janet Schaefer, Guerry Willis, Tom Willis, Shiangtai Tuan, and Louanne Watley.   • The Skylight Gallery presents "Drawing Naked - Twenty Years of Figurative Work by Thomas Stevens", an exhibition of mono-chromatic drawings, paintings, and sculptures of the human figure by local artist Thomas Stevens.  Reception on September 25 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • The Skylight Gallery presents new works by acrylic painter KKKKKK and work by studio artists Jayne Bomberg, Tom Guthrie, Jennifer E. Miller, Andrea DeGette, Jacquelin Liggins, and Tiffney Marley. Reception on October 30 from 6 – 9 pm. Presents first annual Dogumentary Film Festival.  Whether you have long ears and a short tail, or short ears and a long tail, bring your favorite pup to the screening. Refreshments provided for you and your furry friends!

  • Invited friends of the Skylight Gallery present a mixed media show titled "Abandoned." Based on an E. M. Forster quote, "A work of art is never finished. It is merely abandoned," this exhibition is not about failures. Rather, these are creations that the artists have put aside for reasons that they may explain in writing beside their work. The public will be encouraged to add comments. Reception on December 4 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Meet us at the Barn" featuring acrylic paintings by Cedar Glasgow and Wyndi Riley. Opening reception on August 28 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Stephanie's Vision" featuring photography by Stephanie Willen Brown. The show runs from April 1 through 30. Artist reception on April 24 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Kaleidoscope" featuring mixed media by Lauren Christensen. The show runs from May 1 through 31. Artist reception on May 29 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Pulp Fiction" featuring mixed media by Ida Trisolini. The show runs from June 1 through 30. Artist reception on June 26 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents photography by Bob Brame. The show runs from July 22 through August 30. Opening reception on August 28 from 6 – 8 pm.

  • Presents "Brooke’s Vintage Aprons". The show runs from September 1 through 30.

 

The Eno Gallery at 100 South Churton Street.

  • "Zephyr Memories" a solo exhibition featuring abstract landscape paintings of Jolene Powell.  The show runs from January 30 through February 22.  Opening reception on January 30 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • "Ways To Go" a solo show of paintings by Marlise Newman. The show runs from February 27 through April 18. Opening reception on February 27 from 6 – 9 pm. Talk and Reception with the artist March 27 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Conjured Ghosts" featuring an exhibition of paintings by Julyan Davis. Julyan Davis is a British-born artist who has painted the South for 25 years. This show brings together new landscapes of North Carolina and figurative studies from his traveling museum exhibit of murder ballad paintings. The show runs from April 24 through June 21. Opening reception on April 24 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Birdland" featuring works by Tim Turner and Molly Cliff Hilts. This exhibition brings two artists that explore their vision of avian life through their paintings and drawings. We share a connection with birds every day through their singing and our wonder at their ability to slip the bonds of earth and take flight... Their migrations mark the rhythm of the seasons. With associations of freedom on the wing, they have been an inspiration throughout history. The show runs from June 26 through August 23. ​Reception on June 26 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Time Out" featuring a solo exhibition of new paintings by Tezh Modarressi. Tezh Modarressi received a BFA from The Rhode Island School of Design in 1988. "Tezh Modarressi's small-scale paintings... are psychologically charged. ...showers of sunlight can't help but recall Vermeer, they're calming amid the shadows and emptiness of many of her rooms." Cate McQuaid - The Boston Globe. The show runs from August 28 through October 18. ​Opening reception on August 28 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Fine Southern Clay" an invitational exhibition featuring 23 southern clay artists. This show runs from September 25 through January 15, 2016. Opening reception on September 25 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Carolina Impressions" featuring a collection of new Landscape paintings inspired by travels in North Carolina by Michael Brown. This show runs from October 30 through November 29. Opening Reception with the artist on October 30 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents a special feature of new paintings by Nancy Tuttle May along with an Eno artist’s group exhibition, with work by Eno Gallery artists. This show runs from December 4 through January 17, 2016. Opening Reception on December 4 from 6 – 9 pm

 

The Qi Garden at 112 South Churton Street.

  • "Flower Winds" featuring botanical works in beeswax with collage by Lee Moore Crawford. Fresh flowers and arrangements by both Lee and Lucia will also be available. Artist reception on April 24 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents an evening in the garden on May 29 from 6 – 9 pm. Come visit the meditation garden at the Qi garden. Check in with Lucia at the shop and we'll take you to the back garden and art space.

  • Presents "Beyond a Glimpse: An Intimate Affair with Nature", an amazing collaboration featuring Aisha Sanders with living terrariums along with photographer, Mike Dellerman.  Enticing photography, enchanting living art, and more inside the gallery and outside (weather permitting) on the back patio as well on June 26 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Miscellaneous Moments: Relax" featuring photography by Kristine Remlinger. Kristine's been taking photos for most of her life.  Her work consists of original photos which are enlarged, attached to canvas with mod podge and then sealed.  The canvas edges are handpainted black and are very lightweight for ease of display and to prevent delay from hanging  as we often delay hanging up our art work as we wait to buy a frame, etc. Reception on August 28 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Spirit Guides" featuring ceramics by Dona McNeill. Dona works with Raku and high fired stoneware to produce table sized Spirit Guides such as Shamans, Angels, Sun Gods and Wizards. Reception on September 25 from 6 – 9 pm. Please stop by to meet Dona and view pieces with stories...

 

Carolian Wellness Center at 121 West Margaret Lane.

  • Presents "Reflections of Home and Afar" featuring a collection of Dave Schwartzburg's favorite images from international travels and around North Carolina. Artist reception on April 24 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents Shannon Fitzgerald’s paintings on canvas with textures of fabric and nature. Artist reception on May 29 from 6 – 9 pm and June 26 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "By The Book" featuring sculpture by Ida Trisolini. Artist reception on July 31 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents work by Wendy Collin Sorin. Her work is a meditation on the grid, the passing of time, and the deconstruction of language. Recent and current series are inspired by found objects and paper ephemera collected from her travels. Artist reception on August 28 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Get in the Halloween spirit and stop by to view Shannon Fitzgerald's original artwork for her new children's book Halloween Night! If you'd like to purchase this whimsical Halloween book Shannon will be there with copies on hand ready to sign and personalize your copy. She will also have prints of the book illustrations and quilt patterns for the coordinating Halloween wall quilt she designed on hand. Come in costume if you like and enjoy some Halloween fun!

  • Presents "As Best You Can, Let Whatever Might Rise" featuring the mixed media paintings of Linwood Hart. Artist reception on December 4 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents books signing for Lori Vrba’s Moth Wing Diaries.  The show runs from March 27 through May 22.  Opening reception and book signing March 27 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Darkroom to Daylight" featuring black and white photographs by Harvey Wang. Opening reception May 29 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Landmark" featuring works by Joel Fischer and Justin Leonard. The show runs from June 26 through July 27. Opening reception June 26 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents Almond Garden featuring Gabriela Maj’s series of portraits from women's prisons in Afghanistan. Almond Garden features Maj's haunting, compassionate photographs of the inmates along with the inmates' own stories. Made over the course of four years, Maj's project is the largest record documenting the experiences of incarcerated women in Afghanistan to date. Together, the voices in Almond Garden testify to the human rights abuses many Afghan women continue to endure, and serve as a call for much-needed support from the international community in the battle for women's rights in Afghanistan. The show runs from July 31 through August 24. Opening reception on July 31 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Wild & Precious" featuring the photography of Jesse Burke. Reception on August 28 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Ornithological Photographs" featuring color photography of Todd Forsgren. The show runs from September 25 through October 19. Reception on September 25 from 6 – 9 pm.

Melissa Designer Jewelry at 116 South Churton.

  • Presents "Lyrical Elegance" featuring 14 and 18 karat gold jewelry with colored gemstones and diamonds by Ben Dyer. Artist reception on June 26 from 6 – 9 pm. Ben will be on hand to show his jewelry as well as discuss a custom piece of work. Clients who have a gemstone or diamond that they would like to have made into a one-of-a-kind piece should bring it in.

Studio HSBO at 126 West King Street.

  • Hillsborough’s newest gallery showcases colorful oil paintings of the Hillsborough landscape by local bricoleur (and mayor) Tom Stevens, as well other sculptures, paintings, prints, and figure drawings by the artist.

  • Presents guest artist Matt Murray, a local sculptor transforming stone, metal, and wood into abstract figures that reflect an essence of the process that created the work. Artist reception on September 25 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Occoneechee" oil paintings and drawings inspired by the Occoneechee village display in Hillsborough by local bricoleur (and mayor) Tom Stevens, as well other sculptures, paintings, and figure drawings by artist. Reception on October 30 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents a special preview of "Vivacity Local" - oil paintings of known places and people, natural and full of life - an exhibition by Tom Stevens coming to the Captain White House in Graham early in 2016. Reception on December 4 from 6 – 9 pm.

 

Orange County Historical Museum at 201 North Churton Street.

  • Presents a free family-friendly cross stick greeting card workshop June 26 from 6 – 8 pm.  Cross-stitch is the oldest form of embroidery and can be found all over the world.  In Hillsborough girl schools during the 1800s, cross stitch and needle work were important parts of the curriculum.  Students will see historical cross stitch patterns from our collection, and learn to create their own cross-stitch greeting card.

  • Presents a free family-friendly felting workshop on July 31 from 6 – 8 pm. Felting is a way of making fabric by pressing and condensing fibers together. In this workshop, we’ll use wool and tubs of warm soapy water to explore the “wet felting” technique.

  • Presents a free family-friendly Sewn Mouse Toy workshop on August 28 from 6 – 8 pm. For thousands of years before the invention of the sewing machine, all sewing was done by hand! Join us and learn simple sewing techniques that will be sure to come in handy. Students can take a look at examples of quilts and other sewn objects in our collection and practice hand sewing by making a simple stuffed mouse. This workshop will be most appropriate for children ages 7-11, but there will be additional activities for younger children that will also be fun for parents. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

  • The Orange County Historical Museum and Mike’s Art Truck are pleased to announce the exhibit "Picture Hillsborough: Folk Art by Sam Ezell". The exhibit, recently on view at the Hillsborough Visitors Center, features paintings of some of Hillsborough’s historic buildings by local self-taught artist Sam Ezell. September 25 will be the show's last night at the museum, so make sure to stop by and take part in the closing night festivities. In addition, there will be a free watercolor workshop for children of all ages with Sam Ezell.

  • Presents "Picture Hillsborough" featuring paintings by local folk artist Sam Ezell.

  • Presents "Gullah Memories: Folk Art by Irene Tison". The show runs from September 25 through November 19. Reception on September 25 from 6 – 9 pm.

 

Mystery Brewing Public House at 230 South Nash Street.

  • Presents "Moments Captured" featuring mixed media and collage by Kelly Johnston. The show runs from June 26 through July 31. Opening reception on June 26 from 6:30 – 9:30 pm.

  • Presents "Art by Courtney" featuring acrylics and oils on canvas by Courtney Faison. The show runs from July 31 through August 27. Opening reception on July 31 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Dance and Play" featuring oil and acrylic paintings of Dance and musicians by David Taylor. Opening reception on August 28 from 6 – 9 pm.

  • Presents "Ethereal" featuring the surrealistic acrylic and mixed media work of Janice Lemmons. The show runds from September 25 through October 29. Opening reception on September 25 from 6:30 – 9:30 pm.

  • Presents "My Circus, My Monkeys" new work of paintings, drawings and sculpture by Jim Adams -- Three Ring Studio. The show runs from October 30 through December 4. Opening reception on October 30 from 6:30 – 9:30 pm.

  • Presents "The Rouges Gallery" featuring cast cement by Terry Massey. Artist reception on December 12 at 1:00 pm.
