The Solstice Lantern Walk will take place on December 21 at 5:45 pm. The color theme for the lanterns again this year is all white. Please do not incorporate other colors into your lantern.
This event is free and open to the public but all participants must register in advance and bring a handmade, white lantern with a battery operated light source (fairy lights, LED light, votive candle). No flames allowed.
BELLS are a new addition for this year! It is not mandatory for participation, but folks are encouraged to purchase a bell for $1 to help add a quiet twinkle to our otherwise silent walk.
WHEN AND WHERE DO WE MEET? Beginning at 5:30 pm, all participants must enter the Riverwalk from the Farmer's Market Pavilion, 144 E. Margaret Lane, Hillsborough. All other entrances will be closed. The approximately 30-minute walk will begin a 5:45 pm.
SPECTATORS: If you want to be a spectator, we recommend the view from the Eno Parking Deck (behind Weaver Street Market). Only individuals with lanterns will be allowed to enter the Riverwalk.
Again, this event is FREE but we need you to REGISTER to help us to organize the walk. We cannot wait to see your beautifully creative lanterns light up the night!
WHY ARE QUIET AND WHITE EMPHASIZED? The Winter Solstice marks the shortest period of daylight and the longest night of the year. The Solstice Lantern Walk is a non-denominational celebration of the days slowly getting longer.
While it is close to the holidays, this is an intentional recognition of the quiet beauty of new winter light. We respectfully leave other winter holiday traditions such as carolling, etc. for incorporation into events other than the lantern walk.
LANTERN MAKING KITS ARE SOLD OUT!
BELLS AND GLUE ARE STILL AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE ($1 each) WHILE SUPPLIES LAST at the Hillsborough Arts Council Gallery and Gift Shop at 102 N. Churton Street.
