In late 2018 we lost a beloved member of our Hillsborough Arts Council family. Marie Smith was an artist, poet and friend to many in the artistic community in Hillsborough, NC. She was a dedicated supporter of HAC and was among the incredible group of volunteers that helped shape HAC into what we are today. Her fiber art included woven shawls, crocheted scarves and hats, painted silk scarves, as well as jewelry, decorative vases, and candle holders made from interesting papers from Nepal and Mexico. She enjoyed creating a wide variety of crafts including beeswax candles, ornaments, stoneware jewelry. Marie served on the HAC board of directors for many years and was a frequent volunteer in the HAC Gift Shop and Gallery.

A joyful and passionate person, Marie helped to start the Art in the Heart of Hillsborough Art Fair on the principle of bringing artists together with the community. It was a way to bring people downtown to support the arts. Eleven years later we are still running this program on those same principals – connecting our community with the artists of Hillsborough and the Triangle.

We will be celebrating Marie and her contribution to the artistic community of Hillsborough at the start of the Art in the Heart Festival on April 27, 2019 (rain date April 28), with a brief dedication to kick-off the day of art, shopping, and music at 10AM.
