Discover complex, multi-layered stories of freedom-seeking, oppression, and women's education through the lives of Elizabeth Hobbs Keckly, Mary-Ann, the Murphy sisters, and Anna Burwell. The Burwell School strives to provide a balanced picture of our collective American history - bearing witness to the ways women's education, the lives of the enslaved and their enslavers, survival, religion, and legacy all coalesce to reveal the history of those who lived at the house.
